Hello Yall,
I just bought a 1984 Jeep CJ7 with a 2.46L 4 cylinder engine, and a 4-speed standard transmission. After driving it for 1/2 mile it died on me and I found out it had a cracked engine block. Now I am looking for a 4.0 six cylinder to replace the 4 cylinder engine. Here are my questions:

1- Does anyone know which 4.0 year models would be compatible with my Jeep?
2- Does anyone know where I can get a used one?

Thank you

Firstly, welcome to TX4WD!

I've moved your post to the tech section of the forum. The forum you posted in is for official TX4WD organization related discussion.

That said. I don't know that any 4.0L are directly compatible, but I'm sure you can find adapters and such to mount it in there no problem. Pretty much all year model 4.0's are the same except the later ones replaced the distributor with coil packs.

Sorry I cannot be of more help, but hopefully someone will chime in with more helpful info. I do not know where to buy one, Craigslist may be a starting point.
Good luck with the replacement!

go look on pirate 4x4 forum, im sure you can find all the info you need on there, only thing I can add is to make sure its an early obd1 4.0 like out of a very early xj or something so you don't have to deal with all the computer stuff

Welcome to the club!

Just a thought to throw out there...

Have you looked into a small block v8?

Those are plentiful, rather cheap as I don't see it costing any more than the straight 6, easy to work on, and plenty info out there on how to drop one in a CJ. A little 305 or 350 would go well with that 84 :thumb If you don't plan on wheeling it a carb will make everything cheaper and much more simple as well! No brainbox to deal with!

Let us know how your search goes, plenty on here will would love to see the progress of the build!

Thanks,
Alex

don't over look the 4.3 Chevy V6. Runs cooler than the V8 and weighs less.plus you can find more of them in the wrecking yards these days than the SBC.

I second the 4.3 as long as you go pre-vortech and get the tbi one, they are plenty strong and dependable

or swap out the intake and distributor. my favorite set up is a duel fuel propane/ gas set- up.
