Bar M Ibex Buggy Build Thread

Well, I finally got enough of this thing going to start a build thread. I didn’t want to start it until I had something to actually show. This project has been in the making for about 4 months so far. Most of that time has been planning and getting the parts ordered and in hand. This build is obviously going to be a long one, so updates on this thread might be far between. Here are some specs about it.

    GoatBuilt I-bex 2 seat buggy
    www.goatbuilt.com

    FRONT AXLE
    1990 Ford Dana 60
Jana 76 conversion (Dana 70 ring & pinion in a Dana 60 housing…..what a pain in the ass that was!!)
Yukon alloy shafts with 35 spline outters and drive flanges
    Detroit Locker
    Reid Racing Knuckles
PSC full Hydro Steering with 2.75” double ended ram
    5.13 gears

    REAR AXLE
    2004 Chevy AAM 14 bolt
    TMS Customs shave kit
    Disc brakes (stock)
    ARB Air Locker
    5.13 gears

    6.0 Vortec LQ9
    4L80E Transmission
    Atlas 2-speed T-case with 4.3:1 low range

    43x14.50-16.5 TSL SX
Custom made Stazworks wheels (16.5x12 with 3” backspacing, internal double bead lock and rock rings)

    ADS Coli over springs (14” & 16”)
    ADS Air bump stops

Here are some pics of the progress so far. Chris Pelatari and I got the whole chassis tacked together this past weekend. The quality of this kit and the engineering Drew put into it is absolutely amazing. It is literally a giant 3D puzzle.

This is what it looked like when I got it. 1000lbs of American made tubing!!!

Floorboard layed out on the jig.

Passenger compartment tacked together, front in going together.

End of Saturday night. Got the front end done and the chassis turned around on the jig to start on the rear end in the morning.

    Cage starting to take shape

    Rear coming together

All additional tubing added. Chassis pretty much complete. All tubes are only tacked together. Still got a few more tubes to add and some gusetts, then its time to go to town with the welder.

Here is a pic of the front 60. I had to cut out and section the front diff cover to make room for the big ass Dana 70 ring gear.

I'll post up more pics as progress is made.

Mike, thats weird - I have a 70 rear in my YJ and was able to use a 60 cover (Rockcrusher) with no issues. I guess that cover is tight against that ring gear.

Clint - yeah, it was barely hitting....like only an 1/8" more needed for clearance. So instead of grinding out the diff cover, I just cut a big hole in it and will plate over it. Also had to do quite a bit of grinding inside the housing to make clearance for the ring and pinion gears. Here is some more info on the Jana 76 kit. Its a pretty cool idea, and will make the axle quite a bit stronger.....but holy crap that was a lot of work to get the gears to fit! Don't think I'll be doing that again for a long time!!!
