home zombie defense - teach me.
so it has started. zombies are coming. i want to be prepared. i have gotten the go ahead to get something. now what to get. it will be used mostly for fun target shooting on private property. but it will be a backup home defense/zombie gun. so cheap ammo is good. lets not get crazy pricy but i do have money to play with. semi auto, light-ish, good stopping power, not too much kick for multi shot scenarios. this is just the start of my research.
i have a 12 gauge Ithaca pump and a mosberg 500 410 pump for her.
got to shoot an AR-15 chambered for .223 over the holiday. i like that thing. i need to practice. i can barely plink empty cans anymore.
so rifles are what i'm more comfy with. pistols seem like accidents waiting to happen to me. i have no interest in concealed carry.
what should i get?

AK-47 you can buy them as low as $450 and as much as $1800 for top of the line, ammo is cheap and made everywhere in the world.good for about 400 yards.
AR-15 ammo is plentiful, good for 600 yards can be bought for $750 and up to $1500.
one of each would be better!
I prefer my Arsenal AK-47 because you can dig it out of the mud or sand and it will still work. you don't need a permit to carry in your car or home with a pistol, you should always have a back up in any caliper it does no matter. no one likes to get shot in the face even if it's a .22....

IF you don't have a .22 yet I would highly recommend the ruger 10/22 to use for practice and hunting small game. Even the little .22 will kill a man, it has been used for many a year to poach deer and other game with which I do not endorse. I concur with txfrog on the AK, but there not the most comfortable or accurate weapon platform out there. I prefer the black gun. You could also look into the lever actions but they run just as much as an AK.

You could also look at the carbine models in the AR platform depending on your budget.

What about full size pistols since you don't want a CHL. I think all my guns are same accident risk. A mini14 with a folding stock is also nice.
A shotgun with a stock and 18.5" barrel will stop them before they get in. Pistol grip is my style (Winchester defender) but it will rip your hand off or bust you in the face if you don't man handle it.
Ak47s have cheap ammo if you buy the Russian stuff, and you can bury them.
+1 on ar15

What exactly are you looking for? What purpose? Where would it would be used in a line of defense. Are looking for something that would be used in our house or close quarters? Do you have kids? Where are there bedrooms in relation to yours? You need to think about all these things before you choose.
